A Cincinnati animal shelter provided a sad update Thursday on a cat who touched thousands of people’s hearts — Sammy has died.The 19-year-old cat at Cincinnati Animal CARE went viral online in mid-June after the shelter threw him an adorable birthday party.The animal shelter said Sammy was looking for a nice, quiet home to live out his golden years.”The only rule for adopting Sammy though? You have to throw him a 20th birthday party on 6/15/22!” the shelter wrote on Facebook.The next day after his birthday party, Cincinnati Animal CARE provided an update saying Sammy had been adopted. They said the cat’s adopter messaged the shelter about Sammy before he became internet famous. They said Sammy’s adopter was waiting outside of the shelter for him before it opened the next morning.Staff members said Sammy was going home with a fellow senior kitty. He was spoiled by his adopter and was even given a new hat.On Thursday, Cincinnati Animal CARE posted on Facebook that Sammy had crossed the rainbow bridge. The shelter said Sammy passed in his cat condo at his home.”While we never get enough time with our pets, we like to think Sammy had the best ending an animal can get. He got a birthday party, some fancy hats, became world famous, ate a big feast, and got the best adoptive home he could’ve asked for,” the animal shelter wrote on Facebook.Cincinnati Animal CARE thanked Sammy’s adopter, Bethany, for providing him with so much love and care. “We like to think Sammy perked up in his final days so he could meet Bethany and find the perfect home to finally rest,” the shelter said in its Facebook post.In honor of Sammy, Cincinnati Animal CARE is encouraging others to adopt senior cats so they can all have special final days, just like Sammy did.To learn more about the shelter, click here.

The animal shelter said Sammy was looking for a nice, quiet home to live out his golden years.

“The only rule for adopting Sammy though? You have to throw him a 20th birthday party on 6/15/22!” the shelter wrote on Facebook.

The next day after his birthday party, Cincinnati Animal CARE provided an update saying Sammy had been adopted. They said the cat’s adopter messaged the shelter about Sammy before he became internet famous. They said Sammy’s adopter was waiting outside of the shelter for him before it opened the next morning.

Staff members said Sammy was going home with a fellow senior kitty. He was spoiled by his adopter and was even given a new hat.
