Blue Ridge Beef issued a recall for several lots of its 2-pound pet food due to the potential for salmonella and listeria contamination.
The Blue Ridge Beef recall includes 2-pound versions of Kitten Grind, Kitten Mix and Puppy Mix. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture discovered the issue when one lot of each of the products tested positive for listeria and salmonella Dec. 15.
The kitten food recall includes lots N24 1114-N24 1224 of the 2-pound logs of Kitten Grind with UPC 8 54298 00101 6 and the Kitten Mix with UPC 8 54298 00143 6. The same lot range applies to the puppy food recall for Puppy Mix with UPC 8 54298 00169 6.
Salmonella and listeria can impact both the pets who eat the food and the humans who handle the food, especially if they do not wash their hands thoroughly afterward. Infected animals may experience lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.
Blue Ridge Beef distributed the kitten and puppy food products Nov. 14-Dec. 20 in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
No reports of illness related to kitten, puppy food
Blue Ridge Beef says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
