If cats were people, they’d be psychopaths, scientists say

Some say “cats are people, too” — but if that’s the case, you’d better watch your back. A study has found that the average cantankerous kitty could be harboring actual psychopathic tendencies. Researchers at the UK’s University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University surveyed pet owners to rate their cats’ level of psychopathy — as defined by human psychological standards. Their findings, published in the December issue of the Journal of Research in Personality, revealed that most cats fall somewhere on the spectrum of psychopathy — that is, on the “triarchic” concept of psychopathy, which uses levels of boldness, meanness and disinhibition to measure the psychiatric disorder in people.…

A New Roadmap for Feeding 9.7 Billion People, Sustainably

Words by 3P Editors Northampton, MA –News Direct– TriplePundit The global community will have to find a way to feed 9.7 billion people by 2050 in a warming, resource-constrained world. It will require a rethink and collaboration from those across the value chain, as demand for animal protein is only set to rise. The challenge is that agriculture is already cited as a top greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter and user of natural resources, with livestock alone producing about 14.5 percent of global GHGs. The industry will require science-based, purposeful solutions in order to lessen its footprint and sustainably produce enough nutritious protein for the growing population. We all have a…

VB shelter sees increase in people surrendering pets

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — During the past few months, officials at the Virginia Beach SPCA say more and more people are giving up their pets, dropping them off at shelters. “Since things have loosened up, we have seen more pets being surrendered,” explained Mandi Kowaleski, the communications and marketing director for VBSPCA. During 2020, the number of dogs surrendered to shelters in the United States decreased nearly 25% compared to pre-pandemic 2019, according to the organization PetPoint. PetPoint’s data shows numbers began to flip this past March and continued on an upward trend this summer. This June, the data shows shelters across the country took in 13% more dogs…

Wolves Raised by Humans Can’t Understand People like Dogs Can

You and your dog no doubt have a special bond. But it’s deeper than all those scraps from the table or trips to the dog park. Something far in the shared evolutionary past of dogs and humans has linked the two species, making our canine companions especially good at understanding when we want to help or communicate with them. Point in the direction of wayward kibble on the kitchen floor, and your dog likely will follow your guidance to gobble it up. That is a skill that not even our closest relative in the animal kingdom can match. “Chimpanzees can run circles around dogs on so many things,” says Brian…

Be aware! Rattlesnakes are out and biting people and pets

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. – In just the last month, rattlesnakes have bit at least one person and two pets on Jeffco Open Space trails, according to rangers. Plus, local veterinarians tell FOX31 they’ve treated about a dozen dogs and a cat after they’ve been bitten recently. “That’s not uncommon, because dogs do explore off the trail corridor, and they can get in trouble with their nose,” said Jeffco ranger Mary Ann Bonnell. That’s why she stresses people should stay on trails and keep their dogs on leashes. Rattlesnake season is heating up in Colorado; here are the rules for hunting them In an average year, Jeffco rangers get about two…
