A tale of two raw pet-food companies, locked in a legal battle in rural Pennsylvania.

LYKENS, Pa. – Hundreds of boxes of pet food sit fallow here, one stacked on top of another in the darkness of a cavernous industrial freezer built beside a mountain and rolling farmlands. An Amish farmer pays $6,000 a month to keep the Kure Pet Food products, including fermented goat milk and fish-bone broth, frozen here in cold storage. The Dauphin County company, started by a handful of Pennsylvania Amish farmers last year, is in limbo after a Berks County judge recently granted an injunction filed by Answers, another, long-established company in the lucrative raw pet-food business. None of Kure’s pet food, worth about $1 million, will be going to…

Would you feed crickets to your pet? Why insect-based pet food could become all the buzz

First there was recycling, then cutting down on flights, now feeding your pets insects is the latest lifestyle choice to help tackle climate breakdown. Environmentally minded pet owners are choosing to feed their animals meals made out of crickets, mealworms and black soldier flies in an attempt to curb the huge carbon emissions produced by raising livestock for traditional, meat-based diets. Experts say pets can be fed insects as they are rich in protein, and that farmed species can also contain high fats, oils, mineral and vitamin levels. Preliminary research also suggests that when insects are farmed commercially, emissions, water, and land usage is lower than farming livestock. Nicole Paley,…

Pet owners are struggling to find pet food amid supply chain woes

The supply chain crisis strikes again, and this time it’s targeting the furry creatures that have helped keep many people sane during the pandemic, as reports of pet food shortages roll in from around the country. As companies experience shortages of labor and materials, as well as logistics hurdles, it’s affecting the supply of pet food. This comes as pet ownership across the U.S. skyrockets. According to the American Pet Products Association, pet ownership in 2021 increased to about 70 percent, and in a survey, 35 percent of pet owners said they’re spending more on their pet and pet supplies, including food, over the last 12 months. That’s now being reflected in grocery…

The Pet-Food Shortage Is Real, and Owners Are Scrambling. ‘It’s Been a Waking Nightmare’

After an online order didn’t show on time, Phyllis Pometta stopped at five different stores before she hit pay dirt. There it was on the shelf: beef stew-flavored dog food. Ms. Pometta scooped up about four cans, which weren’t her preferred brand. She was desperate, with supplies of the food she usually bought for her dog nowhere to be found online or in stores. Karma, a Pomeranian rescue, wasn’t as desperate. She sniffed the food and rejected it. Ms. Pometta coaxed the dog to try it by adding beef-flavored treats, which gave Karma an upset stomach for days. After that, Ms. Pometta said she resorted to making Karma’s meals herself,…

Some cat food in short supply due to global production and transportation issues

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – If you’re looking for a cat, you’ll find 80 up for adoption at Paws & Whiskers cat shelter. The organization has plenty of cats, but fewer and fewer donations of cat food. “Our canned cat food donations have gone down considerably, I would say almost by about 75%,” said Sara Baker, Shelter Manager at Paws & Whiskers. Baker says global supply chain and production issues are causing a slowdown at stores such as Pet Supplies Plus, where you will find some shelves empty next to signs stating the company anticipates shortages into 2023. Pet Supplies Plus also has an ample supply of its own brand of…
